Discussion during December
SFGC Meeting 2011
Thank you for your votes for the new board. We will uphold Gopher Flats
Constitution and we are in the planning stages of events to be held throughout
the year to promote Gopher Flats Sportmen’s Club. Our attempt is to strengthen the family
memberships with planned activities, such as a daytime fun shoot, pistol shoot
and Club BBQ for everyone during late afternoons on our club day. GFSC would be
responsible for the main entrée and drinks and members would bring potluck
sides and desert.
Maurice
has already started making contacts for trap events, shoots with other clubs
and has three in the works/process. He is looking at a trap league event for
the year, putting in a yearend installation dinner. These are under discussion
and your input would be valued.
Bobby (Ramon Rigoroso) is Corresponding secretary. Bobby has also offered to
look into our Web site and see if he can assist in getting articles posted and
newsletters.
Appointments
effective immediately:
I
have appointed Maurice Pontoni as Round Robin
Chairperson, and Chairperson of Gophers outreach program. Co chairperson is Eli
Bomar. At Round Robin meeting in January 2012, Maurice will put the Gopher
Flats Sportsmen's club in for three teams. Now is the time to plan shooting at
the Round Robin events. Individual and team scores will be kept for everyone
that participates. More information will follow in February's GFSC newsletter
under President’s notes.
Executive Board Meeting
January
range day will be executive board meeting for elections of officers. We will have the board meeting and members can
attend at the posted time (that will go up the morning of the meeting). There
will be time set aside for open discussion after the meeting regarding 2012
plans and forming a five-year plan for the club. To be discussed: Pot luck
dinners in the months of March, June, September, and December following the
Round Robin shoot; planned upgrades the Gopher’s will need in 2012; planning
awards and prizes for events and as well as outstanding club membership
dues.
Planned
discussion with be addressing Big Bore range use, budget discussion, outreach
program, trap/skeet and pistol events, Gas company purchase. Safety at the
range, Range use, upper and lower ranges.
Range
Master is Paul Steward and assistants John Paro, John
Cowles.
MEMBERSHIP: Invite friends, associates and family
of good character as a guest to our club’s activities and encourage those who
enjoy our activities to apply for membership.
During our
December meeting Phil Prokop introduced Robert ‘Bob’ Lacy as a prospective
member and a vote was taken. It was unanimous and Robert Lacy was voted in as a
new member. Congratulations and welcome
Robert !!!
Our membership
applications have increased and members need to familiarize themselves with
GFSC activities so as to invite prospective members to come out and shoot
safely.
Damage
to our Range
There has been a historical problem with members of various clubs, guests of members and trespassers onto The Range causing willful damage to The Range and privately owned property stored and/or used at The Range. To address this problem and to recover the expenses incurred repairing property damage, a rule change is proposed. Please look at the proposal and be ready to discuss it at our next meeting. The word document can be found at:
For MS Word 2010: http://southwestfirearmstraining.com/gopher/rangedamage2.docx
For MS Word 2003 and earlier:
http://southwestfirearmstraining.com/gopher/rangedamage1.doc
Pictures of some damage can
be seen at http://southwestfirearmstraining.com/gopher/rangedamage.html
This is important for safety as well as respect for our property and courtesy to all club members.
Respectfully,
Michael Farrow

Shoot
Saturday @ 9:00 am. We are located @ P3 above
Cowboy town - Adults $5.00 and children
get to participate for free. Paul Stewart donated another three boxes of
.22 ammo (500 rounds each) and this is greatly appreciated by the instructors
and participants.
Feel free to show up on GFSC day, observe and if
you wish, participate in shooting at steel targets (.22/38/40/45 ACP). Our intent is to get individuals and family
members to participate and to learn how to shoot safely. There is no charge for having fun.

CRC
Meeting update regarding: Range Etiquette.
Please check the calendar in newsletter for the Gopher dates and if you
are going to the range on another clubs day or night please check in with the
range master when you enter the gate. We are asking that you stop and get
out of your vehicle and check in and ask if you can shoot and where you plan to
shoot. Do not just drive by and wave. It is important that you
attempt to find other people up at the range and let them know where you will
be shooting on the range. Use good judgment, drive slowly while on the
range, be safe. We are sharing the range with four other clubs
and we need to get along. If the range master says that they are
using the range and declines your request please be courteous and leave.
We are guests of the other clubs if you pick a day to use the range that is not
designated a Gopher day. The CRC also rents the range to law
enforcement agencies and the range might be closed to all
shooters while they are at the range. If people do not follow these
procedures you might be approached and asked who you are and which club you are
affiliated with. A report will be given at the monthly CRC meeting and
the club representatives will be asked to follow up with warnings to the
members in question. If you have any further questions please contact a
board member. E-mail addresses are in the newsletter. Thank
You, Dave

Firearm Safety (2012)
The title is
misleading: this is about SAFETY all year, but as the weather gets cooler and
the days are shorter, we will continue to have fun at the range. Please be sure you and your guests are
following all the safety rules we have in place. These start with the basic gun handling rules
we are all familiar with:
·
ALWAYS
keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
·
ALWAYS
keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
·
ALWAYS
keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
Some other
important rules are:
·
Don’t
use alcohol or drugs before or while shooting and know your target and what is
beyond.
·
Another
very important rule is everyone on the range MUST wear Ear and Eye
protection. All of the rules are for our
own protection, both for physical safety and financial liability. Our insurance requires that we all follow all
the established safety rules.
Now, let’s go out
and have FUN with GUNS. SAFELY!
Respectfully,
Michael Farrow, CRSO
USPSA
We’re getting used
to the lower range with positive feedback from all of the shooters. Although the weather has been hot, we now
have some “EZ-Ups” to huddle under to get out of the sun. Our turnout has been very good and we are now
back to running six stages.
The last article for
the Gopher Newsletter gave a little history and information about the sport of
practical pistol. I’d like to urge
members to come out to the range and look and participate. If you are interested, the first stop is to
watch a match and if you think you’d like to give it a try most shooters can
get started with equipment they already own.
There’s no need to buy and expensive gun to participate.
Again we always need
help setting up the match and tearing down the match.
Remember, that you
also get work hour credit for helping with the match. If you’d like more information, call or email
Dave Marcinkus 310-822-0643 dmarcinkus@ca.rr.com.
TRAP

TRAP & SKEET: GFSC members are reminded that Day Trap and Skeet shooting takes place
on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month and on GFSC
Saturdays.
Please
Note: According to our club president, we
can only open/operate trap & skeet stations when it is a Gopher Day.
NOTICE
TO GFSC EVENING SKEET AND TRAP SHOOTERS
Evening trap and skeet events are held on the 2nd
and 4th Thursdays @ 6:45 pm.
In July, we added the 1st and
3rd Mondays at 6:45 pm for additional evenings of skeet and/or trap
shooting. Our Monday evening trap/sheet membership
has been growing slowly and I hope that shooters show more of an interest in
coming out to shoot.
Reminder: Members that use Trap and Skeet
ranges must take out all of the trash in the site barrels and discard same in
the trash containers located next to the entrance/exit gate. Range trap and
skeet houses must be swept, vacuumed and machines need to be filled with birds
when we finish.
ROUND
ROBIN
CONTACT JOHN MANNING @
818-383-4409 if you will
be participating in the Round Robin events in 2012. The events are held in March, June, September
and December. John would like to know
how many members are planning to participate so he can set the shooting
squads. He needs to have more participants
in order to field full squads at the match.
Specific dates of the events will be announced. Thank you.

DAY and LUNCH
Cooking
responsibilities: As a member you are expected to volunteer to cook lunch at
least once every two to three years on our Gopher weekend. We really appreciate
members that volunteer and club members will help make your task easier. The
club will reimburse you for your expenses. There is a $5.00 donation for the
lunch. If the donations do not cover the
cost of providing lunch, you need to submit the receipts to the treasurer or
send them to the club post office address that is on your newsletter for
reimbursement.
Joe
Casillas, his son Nathaniel and Richard Garza
prepared Gopher lunch on December 24, 2011. The food was great. Thank you
gentlemen.
We
are going to need a volunteer to cook lunch for Gopher Day on January 28, 2012.

A special thank you to all Gopher Officers
and Members for the lovely flowers. You
can imagine my surprise (not to mention Jose’s) when they arrived!
I thoroughly enjoy working on the newsletter
and have met so many wonderful people in the club as a result. Before my retirement, I worked 23 years as a
school office manager. Working on the
newsletter allows me to keep up my skills!
